3 Ways To Spiritually Ground Yourself
Our Bodies Hold Trauma
This is one reason why we have to not only change what we put in our bodies but the environment that we are in. I know that it isn’t always in our control, but I believe we have opportunities open to us to create safe spaces. The emotional space that we take up is a powerful influence on our healing. As a nutritionist, I see people every day who are doing everything right nutritionally but emotionally are wrecked, and this influences their health.
Whether it is with people, in a park, or in your own room, finding a safe space propels healing processes to take place. In scientific terms, we must allow ourselves to get into a parasympathetic state (this just means relaxed) in order to heal. On a spiritual level, you can understand this process as grounding or embodiment.
So here are 3 ways to spiritually ground yourself to promote healing.
Take Space In a Safe Sanctuary
Do you have a space that you find resonates with your soul? Somewhere that feels joyful, peaceful, and full of potential? Is it in nature, with a friend, or when you are doing a particular activity?
Getting into nature has been scientifically shown to promote healing. For me, I found a specific swimming hole on the Applegate River in Oregon to be my safe sanctuary. I can’t express how important it is to find a space like this one to foster healing.
Journal about Your Safe Place
Now, I want you to visualize that you are in your safe place. What does it feel like? Where are you? What does it look like, smell like, what can you hear? Imagine that you are there. Write this down and take the time to go to this place every day. See what happens.
Smudge A House or Home
Smudging with sage or Palo Santo is a regular routine for me, especially as an empath and since stepping into my purpose as a functional nutritionist. I had little education about the historical meanings of smudging until writing this post, but one major learning is the symbolism of sage smudging for cleansing, healing, and wisdom. While palo santo meaning “holy wood” promotes creativity and extinguishes negativity.
In my own experience, I let the smoke thicken the air around me as I set intentions to “let go”. This gives me a new grounded sense of self. I usually imagine the heavy feelings sink away with the smoke as I inhale the scents of sage and Palo Santo with a renewed sense of self.
How to smudge with sage or palo santo is quite easy and takes little investment, especially if you live in a high desert geographic location (sage grows like a weed!). You can pick your own sage bundle, wrap it in twine and let it dry upside-down.
Light the sage bundle on fire and then blow it out. As it smokes, set an intention and take it to all corners of your house or move it up and down your body.
You can also purchase palo santo here.
Yoga with Dance
Movement, especially barefoot with your feet directly exposed to the earth, is an incredible grounding technique. Tap into your playful childlike self and just move your body!
Start doing this alone in your own safe place so you can start to embody what if feels like to move parts of yourself that aren’t normally called to move. These are often places like your rib cage, your hips, and your intestines!
Yes, you can move your intestines.
Do this on a weekly basis and feel how differently you relate to your reality. Tune in to what is uncomfortable, unrecognized, or are there areas you are ashamed of or embarrassed to move?
How do you feel during? And after?
